The Tango Soul Argentine Tango Academy was founded in July of 2000 in Toronto, Canada. The authenticity of our teaching attracts people of all walks of life who find at the Academy a family environment where they can learn at their own pace. We offer dance classes in Toronto.

TANGO SOUL ACADEMY

Tango Soul is the only Academy in Canada that offers a teaching program that focuses on intuitive learning and is not level based.  Our teaching techniques are the same as those taught in Buenos Aires; the walk, the connection and the embrace are the foundation to our teaching. We encourage our students to find their own expression which should come naturally and is not copied from any instructor. Musicality and gentleness go hand in hand in keeping the harmony in the couple. Figures flow out of improvisation and the woman uses embellishments in the cadencias. We focus on creating a friendly environment so that  our students feel stress free and are able to relax in the dance in order to grow better.

The TANGO SOUL pillars
Our teaching is based on four fundamental pillars:
  • Music / Tempo

  • The Walk

  • The Embrace

  • Sequences

There are no levels in tango, just continuous and infinite growth.

What is ARGENTINE TANGO?

Argentine Tango, the authentic tango, is an "embrace and a walk". It is not about complicated figures, it is about connection and conversation. Argentine Tango has been compared to meditation, it is in the moment. It is not ballroom, it is not salsa, it is not aerobics.

What can Argentine Tango do for you?

Argentine Tango is danced at various locations in Toronto. Almost every night there is a milonga (social dancing, gathering), where people meet to dance tango.  You do not need a partner. Men invite women to dance a tanda ( 3-4 musical pieces with conversation between) , complete strangers may dance together for a tanda.   There is a lovely  etiquette  which makes it very pleasurable for the ladies.  The advantages are exercise ( health benefits), music, shoes and evening dress, new friends and  no age restrictions.  The Tango community is age limitless, from 20’s ~ late 70’s, and they are fabulous. Why wait any longer, give it a try ~ take a lesson!

About the teaching

Tango Soul is the only Argentine Tango Academy in Canada led by teachers from Buenos Aires. Our teaching techniques are the same as those taught in Buenos Aires; the walk, the connection and the embrace are the foundation of our teaching (which is why we don't offer 12 levels). The man leads and the lady accompanies as an equal in the dance. Since no two people can feel the same, tango reveals itself in a different way in each individual. We encourage our students to find their own "style" which should come naturally and is not copied from any instructor. Musicality and gentleness go hand in hand in keeping the harmony in the couple. Figures flow out of improvisation and the woman uses embellishments in the cadencias. Though we use figures during the classes the focus will always remain on the foundation, the connection and the walk.

We focus on creating a friendly environment so that  our students feel stress-free and are able to relax in the dance in order to grow better.

At Tango Soul Academy you will not be told what is Argentine Tango but encouraged to discover it yourself. We hope to have the opportunity to share part of the journey with you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Do I need a partner?

No. Most people come on their own and partner up at the class. We do rotations so everyone gets to dance and practice with different partners.

What shoes do I wear?

Any leather or suede soled shoe will do for the first few classes. Visit our "Store" page to get information on proper tango shoes.

Why are there no levels on the schedule?

Our teaching techniques are based on intuitive learning as taught in Buenos Aires. You could compare it to martial arts and yoga. We recommend you view our documentary to find out more about us and  our teaching techniques before attending your first class.

How long will it take me to learn?

That all depends on how consistent you are. Its 95% practice and 5% talent. We recommend a minimum of 2 classes per week and one practice session for the first year.

When should I start going to the dance socials?

As soon as possible. Making friends, watching others dance  and talking about tango is part of the culture and will help you learn. You should not feel obliged to get on the dance floor.
